Getting Married in North Carolina

You do not have to be a resident of North Carolina married here, but you do need a license. You can get one from the Register of Deeds office in any county in North Carolina. There is no waiting period, blood test or physical exam and once issued the license is valid for 60 days.

In New Hanover County, where Wilmington and the surrounding beaches are located, you can apply for a Marriage License between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm Monday thru Friday at the Branch of Vital Records Department Office located at 24 North Third Street. It is located in Room 101 in the basement of the Courthouse. The phone number is 910-341-4538.

The fee for a marriage license is currently $50. Certified copies are $10 each. All three of the following forms of identification are required for both the Bride and Groom.

* Valid driver's license or DMV picture ID card

* Certified copy of birth certificate

* Valid Social Security card

* All applicants under 18 years of age must have parental consent

* If you have been divorced in the last 60 days you should bring your divorce papers
